Common myths about neoprene wargaming mats can lead to poor care and shorter lifespan. Here we separate fact from fiction with clear verdicts.
Quick answer
Many common beliefs about neoprene wargaming mats are wrong. You don't need to baby them, and they aren't fragile—but they do require proper care to last.
Why myths persist
Neoprene mats are a relatively new surface for wargaming, and advice from other hobbies (like yoga mats) doesn't always translate. Some players assume they need special handling, while others treat them like cheap cloth. Neither extreme is correct.
The truth about durability
Neoprene is a dense, closed-cell rubber that resists tearing and holds its shape. A mat like the Island Path Fantasy Football Play Mat is designed for repeated play and travel. It won't fall apart from normal use, but it can be damaged by sharp objects or prolonged exposure to heat.
Myth vs. Fact: Verdicts
- Myth: Neoprene mats need daily cleaning: Verdict: False. Spot-clean spills promptly, but a full wash is only needed every few months. Overwashing wears out the fabric surface.
- Myth: Rolling a mat causes permanent creases: Verdict: Partially true. Neoprene can hold a crease if stored tightly rolled for weeks. Unroll and lay flat before a game to let it relax. If you store it rolled, give it an hour to flatten before play.
- Myth: All wargaming mats are the same quality: Verdict: False. Print-on-demand mats like those from Mats by Mars use high-quality neoprene and vibrant printing. Cheaper mats may use thinner material that wears faster. Check the mat's thickness and print clarity before buying.
