A practical look at the official Unearth 5 Player Play Mat for Lost Tribes, including size, durability, and who it's best for.
Quick answer
If you regularly play Unearth with four friends or want a dedicated surface for the Lost Tribes expansion, the official 5-player play mat is a durable, well-laid-out upgrade. Its vinyl material and 43-by-28-inch size keep cards and ruins organized without slipping.
Why the size matters for 5 players
Unearth is a game about placing ruins and rolling dice, and with five players the table can get crowded fast. The 43-by-28-inch mat gives each player a clearly defined area, reducing accidental bumps and mixed-up ruins. That footprint fits most standard dining tables, though you'll want to measure your play surface first.
Vinyl durability vs. neoprene alternatives
This mat is printed on durable, easy-to-clean vinyl rather than the neoprene found on many wargaming mats. Vinyl lies very flat and wipes clean with a damp cloth, which is great for snacks and drinks. The trade-off is that vinyl can feel less cushioned under cards and dice, and it may slide on a smooth table if you don't have a mat underlay.
How to decide if this mat is right for you
- Check your group size: This mat is designed for exactly five players. If you usually play with four or six, consider the 4-player or 6-player Unearth mats instead.
- Measure your table: The mat is 43 by 28 inches. Make sure your table has at least that much clear space plus a few inches for player hands and discard piles.
- Consider the expansion: If you own The Lost Tribes expansion, the mat's layout includes dedicated spots for the extra ruins and cards. Without the expansion, some zones may feel empty. The mat works with the base game alone, but you'll get the most out of it with the expansion.
- Think about surface feel: Vinyl is smooth and easy to clean, but it's less grippy than neoprene. If you prefer a padded, nonslip surface, look for a neoprene play mat.
